The CPLP opens a public consultation to create its first common draft guidelines for the promotion of Family Farming
2015/11/06
The deadline for the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries` (CPLP) consultation is November 13 2015.

Friday 6 November 2015, Arkaute. - The CPLP has initiated the creation of common draft guidelines to support Family Farming.  These guidelines will identify priority issues and will support the Member States`  effort to develop a sustainable agriculture to combat hunger and poverty efficiently. The Zero Draft is already available and the deadline for the public consultation is  November 13.

“This kind of initiatives are highly valuable for Family Farming because they propose supporting tools adapted to each context. The creation of common guidelines for the CPLP´s States Members is a relevant political decision that will encourage the production and improvement of Family Farming public policies. Key issues (like access to land, seeds and water,  promotion of women farmers or the creation of opportunities for young farmers) will benefit from this consultation”, remarks Laura Lorenzo, World Rural Forum's International Relations manager.

The creation of these guidelines in support of Family Farming inside the CPLP will allow the Member States to identify priority issues related to their agricultural systems and the their sustainable development. This process must involve all the interested parties.

The deadline for the public consultation is November 13 2015. Then, the comments will be consolidated and presented in an extraordinary meeting of the working group on Family Farming of the CPLP´s Food and Nutrition Security Council (CONSAN-CPLP). Once examined by the CONSAN-CPLP, the document will be made again subject of public discussion from February 1 to March 11 2016. The final report is expected to be approved on April 15 2016 by the CPLP´s working group on Family Farming and, later, on July 2016 by the CPLP´s Food and Nutrition Security Council in an ordinary session in Brazil.

The creation of guidelines in support of Family Farming is one of the aims of the IYFF+10 campaign

The creation of national and regional guidelines promoting Family Farming is one of the aims of the IYFF+10 initiative, a global initiative whose central purpose is to continue the line of work initiated by the IYFF 2014 and benefit Family Farming with better public policies.

The IYFF+10 is based on the Brasilia Manifesto, signed by farmers´ organizations all over the world and supported by rural associations and research centers. Besides the creation of guidelines, its main objective will be the promotion of the National Family Farming Committees and the encouragement of participative research. Gender equality in Family Farming and generational change will be two priority issues in this campaign also.

As happened during the International Year, the IYFF+10 will always seek the maximum cooperation and spirit of understanding between farmers' organizations, rural associations, research centers, governments and international institutions.
